FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT THE WORLD’S VERY FIRST COT MATTRESS TO ACHIEVE THE AAFA asthma and allergy friendly CERTIFICATION MARK

WHY IS A PURE ZEES MATTRESS BETTER?

There are plenty of cot mattress options out there. But for those who are seeking the safest and healthiest of environments for their precious little one, Pure Zees have created a mattress like no other.

Breakthrough Fabric Prevents Contaminants Getting into Mattress
Pure Zees mattresses use a breakthrough fabric that prevents house dust mites (and other contaminants – faeces, vomit, etc.) from getting into the mattress in the first place, while still allowing your baby’s skin to breath.

We have tested for harmful chemicals, emission and irritants so that you can be reassured that your baby’s mattress is providing a safer and better sleeping environment.

WHY IS IT IMPORTANT TO PREVENT HOUSE DUST MITES FROM ENTERING THE MATTRESS?

This means that there is no environment for the house dust mites (and other contaminants) to live in. And this is the real benefit. Because (brace yourself!), the real problem in terms of asthma and allergy triggers isn’t the house dust mite itself. The problem arises when the house dust mite enters a mattress and excretes. It is the faeces of the house dust mite that is the asthma and allergy trigger, not the dust mite itself (we did try to warn you!).

HOW DO I CLEAN MY PURE ZEES MATTRESS?

Your Pure Zees baby mattress, thanks to its unique permanent microporous encasement cover that is impermeable to liquids, is so practical that it saves you time for the other important things in your life.

If your baby has an accident (e.g. vomits, wets the bed, etc.) –

  • you can simply remove the elasticated comfort cover which you machine or hand wash at 40°C,
  • wipe down the encasement cover with some warm mild soapy water and towel dry it with a cloth,
  • put back on a fresh clean elasticated comfort cover.

We recommend that you follow this procedure anyway every 8 weeks even if your baby has not had any wet accidents. We also recommend that you use good fitted sheets on top of the elasticated comfort cover.

CAN I RE-USE MY PURE ZEES MATTRESS?

Good question. Most parents are reluctant to re-use their baby mattress for fear that it harbours contaminants from previous use. Standard advice is to buy a new mattress for each baby. However, Pure Zees is not a standard mattress – because of our unique microporous encasement cover, which is skin breathable and yet amazingly at the same time still impermeable to liquids (such as vomit, urine or faeces) or house dust mites, it is perfectly okay to re-use your Pure Zees mattress since nothing gets inside the core to cause a mess and the resultant possible bacterial problems.

When your child has grown out of using their cot or cotbed mattress, we recommend that you wipe it down and wash the top comfort layer cover before you store it away in a dry clean area for reuse at another time.

WHAT PROOF HAVE YOU GOT FOR YOUR CLAIMS?

Our products are tested and Certified to be asthma & allergy friendly™ by the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America (AAFA). This is a mark that has been developed in response to the needs of consumers who were confused by unsubstantiated allergy claims in the market place.

We are entitled to use the  asthma & allergy friendly™ Mark which is applied to products that consumers can trust have been subject to rigorous independent testing to determine their suitability.

Our Certified baby mattress is tested and proven in accordance with internationally recognized trigger factor avoidance recommendations including allergens and irritants in order to be more suitable for people whose lives are affected by allergies and asthma.

IS YOUR MATTRESS FREE FROM HARMFUL CHEMICALS?

Our cot mattress has been tested and proven to be chemically harmless to babies. This is something that has been proven through the tests our baby mattress has undergone under the auspices of AAFA.

You may be surprised to discover that a study conducted by Clean and Healthy New York, an organisation promoting safer environments, reported that of the 190 crib mattresses investigated, 92% contained one or more chemicals that have been linked to health risks.

WHAT ABOUT THE HYPO ALLERGENIC, ANTI-DUST MITE, AND ANTI-ALLERGY CLAIMS OF OTHER BABY MATTRESSES?

Many other cot mattresses claim to be hypoallergenic and effective against asthma on the basis that the house dust mite cannot survive in their baby mattress because of the fibre, foam, wool or whatever other core they are using. That may be so but the dust mite still has time to excrete before dying and it is this excrement that is the trigger for the possible development of asthma. So it really isn’t the defence that they claim it to be. The Pure Zees difference is that our cot and cotbed mattresses prevent the house dust mite getting into the mattress in the first place and never having the chance to leave its faeces behind.

Also worth noting is the fact that we do NOT use any chemicals to defeat the dust mite. Ours is a physical barrier method that stops the passage of dust mites and will work for the entire duration of the mattress’s proper use. Other manufacturers use chemical treatment or impregnation of the mattress cover which will eventually wear off from washing and through use.

Some organisations will point out that we don’t yet know long-term if there are any possible negative effects on our health from those anti-dust mite chemicals used by others. Regarding, specifically, the use of biocides in mattresses such as silver, PAN International (Pesticide Action Network) say that there is a real possibility that the use of biocides in textiles and mattresses could lead to the development of antibiotic resistant bacteria and this has already been indicated by several laboratory studies. They also say that biocides could pose a direct threat to human health if they lead to the survival of some harmful bacteria which are resistant to antimicrobial products.

WOOL IS SAID TO BE ANTI DUST MITE – IS THIS TRUE?

According to Organic.org wool regulates body temperature and dissipates moisture. They make a claim that wool is hypoallergenic – resistant to bacteria, mould and mildew. They say dust mites need moisture to survive and that wool dissipates sweat and thereby removes the conditions that a dust mite needs to survive.

We would make the following points:

  1. Wool does not stop sweating. No common use textile can stop sweating. It is the body’s want and need to sweat depending on the body’s condition and environmental conditions. Wool cannot control the temperature of a room or control a person’s metabolism. Sweating will occur when the body dictates. If you wear a woolly jumper on a warm day you will still sweat and wool holds moisture and we know this when we wash a woolly jumper
  2. Dust mites feed on dead skin cells. Wool does not rid itself automatically of skin cells. No material does.
  3. Dust mites do feed on organic materials like cotton and wool which contradicts some claims that they cannot survive in natural fabrics.
  4. Many health organisations when referring to asthma and allergies including AAFA (Asthma & Allergy Foundation of America) and EHSO (Environmental Health and Safety online) advise getting rid of woollen underlays and blankets when dust mites are a concern.
  5. Most experts will advise that total encasement is the best way to cut down on the dust mite. This will stop the passage of dust mites and is an effective barrier to dust mites.

WHAT ARE VOCS?

VOC stands for “Volatile Organic Compounds”. The governmental Department of Environment in Ireland gives the following explanation: “VOCs are air pollutants which can have detrimental effects on human health by contributing to respiratory illnesses, and some VOCs are mutagenic or toxic to reproduction and harmful to the unborn.”

Anything new introduced into our houses and especially the nursery room such as items of furniture need time to outgas. That new product smell that most people seem to enjoy is the gradual evaporation over time of chemicals used in the manufacturing process. Some of the chemicals including commonly used formaldehyde can be toxic and dangerous to our health.

Ideally we should try and avoid such products but at the very least we should allow them to air for a period of time before introducing them into our everyday living environment. Foam products particularly are big VOC offenders due to the chemicals used in production and also the use of fire retardant chemicals. Pure Zees mattresses use fibre instead of foam and are inherently fire resistant and therefore have no need for the addition of fire retardant chemicals. Our mattresses have been tested for harmful chemicals and VOCs in particular and we are proud to say that they fall within the strict and tight criteria set down by the AAFA certification program and therefore offers a safer better option for your baby’s precious sleeping environment where they will spend most of their first years.

One scary statistic we came across in a New York review of mattress construction was that 92% of baby mattresses surveyed contained suspect or dangerous chemicals. (Source: Clean and Healthy New York)

WHY DON’T YOU USE SPRING IN YOUR BABY MATTRESSES?

“Research from the independent testing body of AAFA  informed us that spring areas create the space for the large gathering of dust mites.

Spring also generally needs to be covered with foam and the problem with foam is the amount of manufacturing chemicals or fire resistant chemical added that can be harmful to a baby.

The priority with a baby mattress is safety. One of the main requirements in European and American infant mattress safety standards and regulations is that the mattress is “firm”.  A baby needs to sleep on a firm surface and that when a parent comes to choosing a mattress for their infant child they should not look at it from an adult’s point which is generally nice spongy soft comfort, but rather the baby’s requirement of a firm mattress that will not sag and holds its shape.

Pure Zees uses a special High-Density fibre free of harmful chemicals that gives the perfect surface firmness and eliminates the reservoir area for dust mites.

Our advice is to not succumb to an adult’s idea of comfort for a baby mattress but rather the baby’s safety needs and comfort requirements – firmness of sleeping surface, breathable materials that are waterproof so as to protect from core mess, impenetrable cover to stop the march of the dust mites, and an air circulating comfort layer that is not a cause for overheating.”
